Free vs Paid Blogging Software

What are some brands of both types? What are some pros and cons of each type? What do you feel is the best?

Wordpress is the most popular blogging software, I have used mainly wordpress because the ad networks have developed their plugins mainly for wordpress.

Even WP has both a self-hosted and a hosted option.

Not to mention, for most "normal" users, they even apparently offer a totally free avenue to pursue.

True, though if you want your own domain I think you need to pay. But that’s hardly the worst situation in the world to deal with.

Yeah... if you are already hosting a site via another script, adding WP to the mix isn't that major of a deal (other than the domain).
A lot of folks don't really care about the .xxxxx.yyy slug.... as long as they can get IWANTTHIS.xxxxxx.yyy they are happy.

Well, what people have on social media is the same. It doesn't have a domain, only one shared with Facebook etc..

Is Ghost still around? Last I heard it was paid but it might be cloud.

Ghost is still around but it’s open source and you can install it yourself - but because it’s written in Node, it’s harder to get going in hosting environments.

I've never used paid blogging software before. I know Woltlab has their own blogging software and so does Inivision, but I've never used either one before. I'll stick to a CMS over a blog software any day.
