Have you ever been in any forum where you don't have the option to upload any attachments to your posts?

I personally make use of Imgur to generate links to the upload on the platform and add it to my post.

How do you get to upload an attachment which you really needed to back up your post with in such forum?

I can understand the reason why you’d disable this, but in a members perspective, it’s annoying. This isn’t 2005 where you had to use external image upload websites. And with XF, it gets sized down to use space minimally. Also with R2 from Cloudflare, attachments are next to nothing to have.

I only allow attachments in specific forums on my board, like the resource forums where people can upload image previews and coding files. I don't really see the need to enable attachments in discussion areas since that could just contribute to eating up your board's file space and there are plenty of free hosts around to upload stuff you just want to show off.

I have been a member of forums that have disabled this feature and I can understand why some will choose to disable this feature as it can be overly used which then results in your space running out and you having to upgrade for more space.

I myself also use Imgur for images when I am unable to upload attachments.

The only issue with dependence on outside hosting resources, if those images are "important" to your site... when the "remotely hosted image" site goes/shuts down or goes to subscription only for sharing, those shared images go bye-bye. Even currently Imgur is putting restrictions on "older photos" into action.

The benefit of local hosting is they stay there. And with storage costs being what they are, it's not that expensive to use...
Of course, if one is one an unlimited shared hosting account... then they shouldn't have any issues with the number of uploads... as it's unlimited right? 🤭
