Ever take over a business from your boss?

Has there ever been a time where you as an employee were able to take over someone else's business? Maybe the owner doesn't have any next of kin or anyone in line to take the business over when they die. Would you take over a business that was previously ran by your boss?

I have never encountered that situation, but I don't know if I would take it. There are many variables in that equation.
My first question to myself would be... Is this business something I enjoy doing?

Well, that has not happened to me but I was once working for a company where the boss was virtually non existent and I was the face of the company and everyone though I was the boss. I even contemplated on taking over the business but I did not because the business was not making good profits
