I have never done this yet. But I guess it has a lot of potential if you have go the right emails of the people who might be interested in your niche.
Do you think its spamy in nature?
Well I think it depends on the type of email and whom you're sending these emails.

I think 90% of emails are scam, i got many mails in which they are asking for money and will return in few days, they are trying to make me happy LOL

Supposedly you can earn quite a bit but I've never seen any evidence of that. If you offer a great product for free to gain subscribers, then I suppose you could build a good targeted follower list to market to. You can't make every email a promotion one though- only 1 in every 5 or so.
