Email Addresses - superfluous characters what are they?

Hi when members join my XF forum they have to give an email address of course.

But sometimes the addres has extra characters in it mkaing it very long and tedious, such as >> and then a repeat of the name or similar.

What are these >> characters for, and how can I strip them out, they sometimes don't show up till later.
