I am curious about this because right now I have ads at the top of the main page and they show every 3 or so posts in threads.

Advertisement Placeholder
You want ads to be an areas where people expect ads. Many people come on forums to interact, not see ads everywhere. I think having a leaderboard or footer ad is fine. Anything else than that is excessive and seems too much like click bait.

A leaderboard in the footer (and maybe one in the middle of the page if it is a long page) :)

I usually place some "random ads" in different places.. I said "random" because it is displayed 1 time on 5 in that place.. so that it doesn't disturb so much

This is true. Should I do a prompt for people who are running ad blockers? I see that on other forums. I can see that being annoying for some people though.

Is there a way of having them show only sometimes? I know that sounds weird but I don't want people to think that is what the forum is about (just making money from ads)

you can do it with php (server-side) and which is the best solution.. or With JavaScript too! You should just have a random variable and according to the number of times you want it to be displayed (ex. 1/5) you add/remove ads box :)

Nice! Thanks! I thought there was a way of doing this because I have seen it elsewhere. I am going to look into this option.

I wouldn't make it so it's clickbait. Just have it in typical areas like the header and footer.

Yeah, they do. You want to make sure that they are in a place that people will be able to see them. You don't want your ads placed in a place where people won't really see them.

You don't want it to look like a mess but you also don't want ads to go unnoticed. I would say a safe bet would be to have them where they don't look like baited ads and you will be fine.

Post in places you wouldn't mind to see ads yourself. Think of it like you want people to click them but you want them to have the option to not have them in their way.
