Do you think word of mouth is a good idea to get members

Ironically for my forum this has worked pretty nicely. its slow progress but works nonetheless, seems almost better than using ads on FB and google. (spambot attacks are my experience with the last two methods)

It helps, but I've gotten better results from just advertising really. I'll get a few of my foruming friends to join up and just start it from there as really that's where most of the activity starts.

Yeah, I just get a load of mates together on my website and then boom, you've got a pretty solid community to start of with.

I've found that communities are always best to get going and stay strong by word of mouth. You may get a lot of visitors for your content, but most only really stay for the community. Being acquainted to begin with, helps a lot.

It's a great idea, as long as you can work it the right way. I've had a lot of word of mouth promotion helping me out recently :)
