Do you set your forum to show those who's been online?

Sure. But I don't think it's needed unless you have a decent amount of active users on at a given time. Otherwise I wouldn't do it unless you have the traffic for it. Because I'm sure you don't want to see the area show 1 or 2 people online.

You're right about that. It's definitely going to look very embarrassing when it would only appears that only one or two members have been online in your community for the past 24 hours which looks more like a mockery in my opinion.

I use the default setting on my forums. I use open source forum platforms and these forums have limited features and if I want to add an additional feature I will have to add extensions. I am not a fan of using too many extensions as this will make your site slow. My forums show basic stats such as recent posts, last person who joined the forum, etc. but not who is online feature.

I've been on some forum where you can see the number of people who's been online in a last 24 hours. Some show those who's been online for more than 48 hours. Is this kind of feature something you like seeing in a forum? Do you fancy having it set up in your own community?
This would be a beneficial feature for forums, as it will alert members when others are available online. Having this information would help foster better communication and enable forum users to have a more accurate picture of the active user base at any given time.

It is very good to have such features of statistics showing on your website all the time because it is going to give some sort of credibility to those who are visiting your website with the purpose of trying to find out how good your platform is doing.

Using default settings on forums is a common approach, especially when using open source platforms. It helps keep the forum simple and avoids excessive extensions that can potentially slow down the site. Displaying basic stats like recent posts and the last person who joined the forum can provide useful information to users.

When everything is set up this way, it makes it very easy for people who are making use of your website to find it very easy to use because everything is simply set up unlike some website that you are going to find it very difficult to navigate on. In most cases, I quit using such sites.
