Do you ever go through a cleaning of your forums by doing a complete reset? As in, deleting every topic and post the site has and starting from scratch. I have thought of doing this myself, but I don't think I'd want to ever reset my forum in this way. I mean, the idea of losing all of those posts and topics, would suck. And it would probably hurt your ranking if you did.

But, has anyone done it?

Well, while a complete forum reset might be tempting for a fresh start, it's generally not recommended. Instead, focus on regular maintenance and optimization to keep the forum functional and engaging. Preserve valuable content while ensuring the forum remains well-maintained for the community's benefit.

This is something I have never considered when I have owned a forum. Depending on the reason why you are running the said forum, doing something such as resetting and deleting every topic and post could affect not only your SEO but it can also affect a lot more as well as things such as monetization if you use something such as Google Adsense.

I tend to keep my forum as it is but if the time comes I feel it is not going where I want it to, I tend to close it down and be done with it.

Yeah, I think the only way I'd do it if it was some kind of rebrand. But even then, that means you lose all of that content built up over the years. A friends forum I used to go to was hacked many years ago, and it had to be reset and restarted as they didn't have any backups of the forum as it was at the time of the hack. SO they had to rebuild the forum.

True, it would hurt SEO for sure, but as well, all that history built up will be gone. Some forums have history behind them, and a reset just takes that all away.

I have never done this, why would I reset a forum? If I have no desire to continue with the forum, I would consider it putting on sale. If there are no buyers for the forum, I will let it just gather dust until I can get someone to take control over it.

I have never thought about this aspect when running a forum. Depending on the forum's purpose, performing actions like resetting and deleting all topics and posts can have broader repercussions beyond just affecting SEO. Monetization methods, such as Google Adsense, may also be impacted.

Typically, I prefer to maintain my forum in its current state. However, if I reach a point where it's not aligning with my goals, I might opt to close it down entirely and move on from the project.

This is very true. It takes a lot to build up a forum and that can take many years, over those years you will make a lot of memories with your staff and your members and deleting all that would result in deleting a lot of memories made a long the way.

I am someone who loves to look back at older threads when a forum gets older as the memories are always enjoyable to go back to :)

It doesn't make any sense wiping off everything on your forum to start afresh all over again. Instead of doing something like that, I will simply make plans and have the forum sold. I can start all over again with a new different project after making money from selling the old one.
I couldn't agree more. Once you realize just how much work and time you have put into a forum, just deleting it all would not be an option and instead, selling it if you wanted to move to another project would be the better option.

I couldn't imagine getting rid of a forum and deleting all the content that I had worked hard to get because I wanted to choose another niche.

There's a forum owner I know to do this with some of her forums. If my memory serves me right, she's deleted 3 of her forums, and started new one's. I don't understand her reason for doing this because it's a full time waste of effort which is worth a big amount of money.

I think that a forum owner may do that in many cases. They would definitely delete older topics that might not be trending in the search engines. They may do that occasionally. However, some times old topics may also attract traffic and they could also be quite useful as well.

I don't see any reasons with doing this at all. I mean when I check the posts on the forum, it is a reflection of how far that I've gone and telling me to reset it is like asking me to delete all my efforts on building a project which is not how it is supposed to be. I don't even know a reason anyone would do so because even when you want to sell your forum, it is contents that is on the forum that is a big consideration when talking about pricing too.

Once you have done any job on your forum with contents on it as well, the community already have a money worth. It doesn't matter if it's going to be online $50-$100 that you can get from selling it, it's better than not getting anything from it. Flippa marketplace is always available for you to use and sell your forum.
