I always try to get it for long term. Or else I will have second thoughts about giving up my dying website. If possible, I would want to put in more hours so that it would flourish in the near future.

So, I would always get the hosting and domain registration for about 3-5 years. What about you? Is it the same for you as well? Would you go for a long term plan or would you opt for a short term plan, to cut the loses (in case) on time?

Do share your stories here and let me know your experiences here.

I paid for one year and I actually let it expire when it became apparent I won't succeed.

If I were to do it again, I would be better prepared and would pay format leat 3 years. It's cheaper and as you said, motivates you to continue working on it.

Yes it's cheaper to pay for 3 years. However, I have observed that it's a bit expensive when we try to get the hosting plan of about 5 years. I don't get why they try to charge more.
May be it has something to do with hosting cost predictions as well. Do you change your domain provider often, GoldenLady? I have heard that if you were to change it often, you can reduce the renewal costs.

I did change my hosting provider once from GoDaddy to Namecheap and I do agree that it's a bit cost effective now. However, not sure if I could do it often or not and from what I know Namecheap is not that expensive when compared to other service and hosting providers to begin with.

Buying long term is also the best. To avoid spending monies over and over again, one should go for long term plan (say over 5 or 7 years), it'll even be cheaper when properly analyzed

I host all my sites on my own server so I don't really use these services anymore but when I did, I paid yearly. I never felt inclined to pay for several years and be locked in with one place.

I don't own a website for now so i've never had to get hosting. When i own a website, i would get hosting for a long term so i don't also give up on my dying website because i'm quite impatient.

I do not think I have ever bought hosting that has been more than two years before. Technology is changing fast and I really do not know which one is going to be better and I will need to switch to tomorrow.

meaning we are two different set of persons, as i always use the same hosting provider, as changing a hosting provider is hard for me, as i usually do stick to what i know and can trust

It depend on budget. If I have enough money, I can register it for a long time. But if there's no enough money, I will buy it for short time. The minimum I can register it for is 3 months.

Yes you're absolutely right by saying this, I have seen instance like this were by one kept wasting his money over and over again, it is always advisable for one to buy long term.

Of course this will save you time and the stress of thinking about migration, renewals, searching for best prices and all. That way, you're more comfortable and can focus on more productive things.

Migration is the most sensitive administration transaction this is because the migration could faulty let you lose database unless you make daily backups.

When I register a domain, I register it for just one year. I renew the domain every year. When I bought hosting, I bought it for just one year and I renew for every year. Well, I might save some money by registering for a longer term but I will also end up spending a lot of money.

May be you need to start looking at the long term option. Going for long term has many advantages. The more year you go for, the more the discount they give to you. There are times you can forget to renew your domain and hoisting, which may to lead you to loosing your domain. But with long term registration, you be in fear of losing your domain or website over failure to renew it.

Purchasing hosting is my main concern that is why I have been procrastinating the commencement of my website activities and this is because I do not have enough plan to manage the website so there are some things I want to pile up before going into it fully. However I would prefer long term hosting.

If I have an idea for a site and I want it to be long-term and me not have to close it down after a little while I will always go for long-term hosting every time. Unfortunately, the last time I had a site that was a general discussion forum, I ended up having to close it as the hosting I thought was long-term ended up increasing in price by a lot and I ended up having to close as I could not afford the hosting. Now I am very careful when I choose hosting to ensure it is long-term or I have a backup in mind just in case.
