DDOS Attacks on Hosting

Who has experienced it? How did you deal with it? How did the hosting deal with it? If things went bad, did the hosting compensate and how?

How can hosting prevent DDOS attacks? What hosting companies are at a bigger risk?

I once had a DDOS attack on my forum. When it happened for the first time, my web host handled it for me and I did not have to do anything. However, another attack happened in less than 48 hours and my web host said I need to work on my own. I started using cloudflare.
