Could you advertise on your own property?

I am curious, is it legal to advertise stuff on your property? If you own the house, and land, are you allowed to put up a sign to promote a business? Or put up ad placement near your property? Are there rules against it?

In our country, you need permits from municipal government and pay royalties even to advertise on your personal property. I think the same goes in other countries as well.
