I once registered a domain with dot online extension because it cost just $1. I build a site on this. I spent just about $100 to design the domain and develop the content. When I was to renew the domain in the second year, I nearly fainted. The renewal cost was $32.
You can find a lot of domains for a really cheap price during the first year or promotional event, however, you should always check how much you will be paying for the second year renewal.
Since domain extension has nothing to d with SEO there is no need to go to particular domain. I see a lot of fancy for dot io. It is one of the expensive extensions. I don't think there is a need to use this extension, you can use dot net, a cheaper alternative.

To be honest, this is the mistake I have made and I still regret it even now.
Back then, I have no idea that renewal fee can be different than the actual domain registration fee. As Godaddy was offering a good deal for domain registration, I have opted that but now, the renewal prices are higher than Namecheap. I know I can transfer my domain, but I don't want to do just just yet as both my domain and hosting are maintained by Godaddy. It's better to get the complete information first, before purchasing that product. That's the lesson I have learned.

This thread is very important to everyone out there. There are lot of domain that seem good for a start but the registration fee or renewal fee is very high and the income on such is nothing to write home about. One has to be careful when choosing a domain to purchase.

I always check the renewal fees, because hosting and domain names come cheap the first year just to motivate you to sign up.

Later, except if your blog is making money, you will find yourself with expenses you can't afford to pay.

This case is very common among the registrar who always use $1 to attract new customers to their company. Their renewal fee at the second year is usually expensive, some even charge as high as $35 (Nominalia.com is an example). One about this promo is that domain flippers often take advantage of this offer. Once the name is sold it is up to the buyer to renew with the registrar or move to another one.

Sometimes renewal fees can be very high that is why it is important to check before purchasing a domain. Sites like namecheap charge less fees for renewal, that is what I have been using for the last couple of years.

The first domain I registered was xyz domain. I got it for 99 cents. I also found domains like online, club, store, site for 99 cents. I was so happy that I bought over a dozen domains for just $12. However, in the second year I had to spend whopping $200 just for renewal. These days I ony use com because I can get for $13, sometime less during promotion, and also renew for $13.

But typically, renewing a traditional .com domain will be around $9.99 for the entire year. Some domain name registrars even offer an automatic renewal, so you'll never run the risk of your domain name expiring and falling into the wrong hands.

The most important thing you can do to protect your domain name is to know the terms of your domain name registration. Options and fees for renewing domain names, including expired ones, vary by registrar so be sure to read your registrar's terms of service carefully to understand the options, fees, and terms of renewing your domain name registration. It's also important to keep your contact information up to date so you receive notices of any changes to your registrar's terms of service. If you are unsure who your registrar is, you can perform a search to find out here.

Mark your calendar. Keep track of your domain name expiration date so you can renew it before it expires.

I agree that you have to be aware of the renewal fee of the domain name. When the fee becomes exorbitant it is better to move to another domain name provider that is cheaper. There are lots of dot companies that has their own directory for the DNS - domain name server - so you can always move. As mentioned by the OP of this thread the domain name extension has nothing to do with the SEO capability so there is not need to hesitate.

When you register a domain name, you're able to use it for the period of time you registered it for, which is typically between one to ten years. If you want to keep using the domain name and any of the services associated with it (like a website or email service) you need to renew the domain name registration prior to its expiration. If you don't, you risk losing your domain name. ICANN does not have the authority to transfer domain names, including expired ones, back to you.

The renewal fee was not looked at and when the time to renew came, it was too late for you to comprehend that it wasn't cheap after but you've invested in your domain.
A lot of things look cheap on the surface but the hidden terms and conditions imbedded in it, if we had bothered to check would have been enough to keep us away from them

I was new and did not know the renewal price will be different. When you are new you are prone to making mistakes. The mistake I committed could be repeated by others therefore I decided to share here. You should always check the first year cost and second year cost when you are buying a domain or hostng.

I am getting to know also from your post and this is why it is advised that information sharing is a good and beneficial act. It saves others from committing same error.
At least now I know and I will always be on the look out for the terms and conditions always

wow this is serious and it is something I will never imagine or does it mean that the renewal fee of a particular domain will be different from the one you are buying it initially if this is so then we need to be careful because it can actually affect us seriously..

I might be posting on bizdustry because I earn. However, earning is not the only reason why I am here. While it is good to earn from your content, the knowledge I can gain by participating in the discussion is immense. Ever since I joined this forum I learned so many times. Forums are one of the best places to learn new things.

I hear that don com does not have additional renewal fee. You will be paying the same amount for renewal that you paid while registering. Therefore, if I ever decide to register my domain, I will register a dot com

Yes it is always issue as many hosting sites which offers free domain have higher domain renewal price. So I always go for small unknown domain registrar company which have reasonable price to renew.

Sometimes you can get a domain for really low price but the second year cost will increase by many folds. The first domain I ever owned was xyz. I bought it for 99 cents, however, in the second year, I paid $7, in the third I paid $10 and now I am paying $13 for the renewal
