Cheap alternative to LEGO?

Do you guys know of any cheaper alternatives to LEGO? I want to get more into model building and like what LEGO offers, but they are too expensive these days. Do you know of alternatives that are a bit cheaper and or more affordable? I'll even take model kits and stuff.

Mega Bloks or Kre-O offer more affordable alternatives while still providing a similar building experience. These alternatives can be a great way to enjoy creative building without breaking the bank.
