Buying Social Network Upgrades

I'm curious what your thoughts are on buying social network upgrades? For example, purchasing twitter followers or facebook fans. You may say this is cheating, but there are people who are willing to provide real human users to your social networking page and boost its activity (and many do this very cheaply too!)

This means that your page naturally becomes more popular.

Would you ever do this for any social networking site in order to boost your own sites activity? Is it wrong? Does it work?
