Most people who are looking for someone to write for them or offer other services tend to look at portfolios so it is very important to have one.

My first self hosted website was actually a personal blog where I not only shared my writings but also shared my portfolio. I was using my first name for the domain name. The blog helped me to gain search engine value (people were actually searching my name on Google.
