Yes I think blogs are important.
Wordpress blog platform is the most "SEO ready" CMS in my opinion. The availability of lots of plugins is an added advantages.
Almost all of my websites are simply blogs because of this reason. The SEO work is a lot lesser with blogs with the help of automatic pinging, keyword tags, proper headers, titles and a lot more other features of blogs!

Currently working on one of the blog, i am using wordpress for it.
