Yeah, you can't go by the number of visitors shown. Many of them will be bots of one type or another, many of which show up as guests in the XF tally and not as a robot if it does not recognize it.
As an example, I pushed out some stuff to my FB page (images and article type content from the site). Shortly after that my visitor count jumped by about 20. They showed as guests, but when checking the IPs (they were different) almost all of them came back to META out of Ireland.

Does anyone know the caching time for XF?

For example, if your caching for guests is measured over 1 hour, that will capture more guests than a caching time that is only 15 minutes.
it’s located in the “user options” tab in the admin panel. You can change the who’s online timer in that section.

Currently, AJ’s who’s online timer is set to an one hour.

I’ve seen it go up to 1000. 🫣

@joelr is your investment paying off from my database 👀
It’s curious to see Bizdustry’s state at the moment. Still every member that is now also duplicated on AJ, and some posts left on Bizdustry. Thought you were rebranding to a E-bike kinda thing?

I also wonder if any of the urls were redirected to AJ.
Idk, bots will probably re-crawl everything, hence there’s 700-1000 guests. I’m guessing most of them are hitting the new Bizdustry threads

I saw this the other day:

I honestly got excited, but yes, some of them are bots, but I checked their IP addresses. It's China. I am thankful they didn't spam, but that's what I saw. Phew.

Thing is, I took advantage of the next 5 to 30 minutes, screencapping it, and posting it to my instagram/threads account for the website. ;) Damn I love marketing.

It always looks great when you see a lot of guests online on a forum and in some cases, that can be great for the forum but you always have to realize that in reality, a lot of them could be bots, which in turn can also he great for the forum but if they are able to get through and they are spam bots, could cause issued.

Yeah I bet most of those visitors were bots. There's times where I get a huge influx of visitors and they're usually bots since they have similar IP addresses.

This is definitely what I thought of. Yes, Admin-junkies.com is one of the biggest Admin and promotion forum today but I'm not sure it's yet at the level of pulling 700 visitors at once. Maybe in the future, it's going get to that level as it keeps growing.

I once saw 600 visitors on my forum, excited I went to check Google Analytics and it should just about a dozen.
I think there is a bot running around. Just blocked an ASN that had driven my visitor count up WAY beyond what it normally is (which is around 2-12 when I've looked).

GA check didn't show them as visitors to the site, so they were pretty much bots that XF doesn't have the ability to detect (and that is not that unusual honestly for most scripts).

This is impressive. Where is it coming from? None of my business, ha ha. I think most forum owners want this much traffic.
My Off Topic Forum the other day had around 650 guests.

It's a brand-new forum.

I went through and checked the IP addresses. Most were IPs or bots that were submitted to websites that claimed malicious intent like DoS attacks.

I've been banning them as I see them. I feel like that's a good practice.

It's your resources they eat up anyways.

Luckily, my VPS is pretty big, so it didn't even put a dent in it. But I'm sure it eventually can.
