I'm just curious. Without having a welcoming, landing page, does anybody use a mission statement to describe what their forum is about for potential new members? If you do, what do you use (a banner, a pop-up message, a pinned thread (and where), a link, etc)? How effective do you think a Mission Statement is?

A mission statement is crucial for any community or business. It’s helpful for knowing what you want to do and for your audience what to expect. Start with a mission statement, then start on anything else.

Also worth noting, a landingspage or welcome page is something completely different to a Mission Statement and both are best advised to have. Implemented with each other is a good possibility but still required. ;)

I've a thread that explains who and what Gex is on Gex Forums. I think it's a good idea to let guests know what your website or community is about, and what principles it's built upon. In my case I was shocked to find out that there were a lot of people who never played any of the Gex games so having a thread that explained who Gex was and the main plot of the franchise helped potential members understand more about the franchise.

For my craft forum, it's pretty obvious what it is, so I don't think I need to waste anyone's time putting together a mission statement. Now, for the Christian forum, people have asked about something similar, because they want to know how we "define" Christian and so we have come up with a Statement of Faith and the reason we have it as a Christian forum should be fairly obvious as to our mission :)
