The site was offline from approximately 20 hours. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Upgrade issue?
My process before an upgrade is to put the site in maintenance mode, do a full system backup (files and database) and verify the backup.
Then proceed with the upgrade. That's after having tested it on a development installation.
I am waiting on 2.4 before I go down that path as I have a lot of customizations to my site that I will have to redo.

I was wondering what happened the other day when I couldn't log in lol. If it was due to an upgrade, I always make sure to tell my members that we're going offline for a bit until upgrades are done and everything is good to go.

What was the cause?

Downtime happens. There is definitely no such thing as 100% uptime.
