Perceived Expertise And Authority

Part of the problem, though, is that in the current age building that perceived expertise and authority is much harder than you might think. Especially on forums where, notionally, all voices are equal but some are more equal than others.

I've lost count of the number of times I've had people telling me I have something wrong - when we're talking about something that I literally wrote. That people tell me what design decisions were made based on nothing more than their imagination - I was the one building the thing, I know exactly what went into it and why, can't really get more expert than that. And yet, I keep finding that people think I'm in the same camp as them, just another forum poster.

It's a fascinating - if often annoying - journey to go on.
