I think they can - but it also depends on what you're advertising. People frequently look at signatures as they post, and they might not be intending to click on them... but people are curious creatures typically and will click most - if the link is somewhat separated from the rest of a person's signature I think it does well. It might not be the traffic of the old days, but I think it can still be beneficial.

Well, they can be used for traffic. However, I was looking at them as a way to boost SEO.
