Have you ever heard of the term, Guerrilla marketing?

Guerrilla marketing is when you use unconventional ways to market your online community. Most tactics you use have no cost or maybe just a little bit of money is spent.

An example could be create business cards with QR codes on them and a message that says "What is your opinion?" and then link the QR code to a post that controversial enough to emotionally connect with people and make them want to join the forum to reply. Then you'd leave these cards around coffee shops, libraries, and other areas like that to get a mix of different people and potential new members.

Another method, let's say you have a cycling forum. You get a chance to go to the Tour de France or a race like that. You bring a sign that says "Join my CyclingForum.com" on the sign and wave it as camera crews go by. That's another form of unconventional Guerrilla marketing.

Have any of you tried this method with your own forum and how successful was it?

I'd like to get into that style. It would be interesting to compare guerilla marketing to other types. Would it be more effective?
