Starting a new forum in 2023

I've read an article today by Shawn Gossman which inspired me to this article. Starting a new forum can be a daunting task. There are so many things to consider, from choosing the right platform to promoting your forum and keeping it running smoothly. That's why we've compiled a list of tips to help you get started on the right foot.

Your Idea and choosing a Niche

Deciding on a niche for your forum is an important step in the planning process. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right niche:

  1. Identify your passions and interests: Think about the topics that you are most passionate about and that you have a good understanding of. This can help you narrow down potential niches for your forum.
  2. Research potential niches: Once you have a list of potential niches, do some research to see if there is demand for a forum on those topics. Look for existing forums in those niches and see how active they are, and also consider the potential size of your target audience.
  3. Consider your goals: What do you want to achieve with your forum? Do you want to build a community of like-minded individuals, provide a platform for discussion and debate, or offer a resource for information and support? Your goals can help guide your decision on the best niche for your forum.
  4. Think about your target audience: Who do you want to attract to your forum? Consider the age, location, interests, and needs of your target audience when choosing a niche.

Hosting & Domains

When it comes to choosing a domain name and hosting for your new forum, there are a few things to consider:

  1. Keep it simple and easy to remember: Choose a domain name that is short, catchy, and easy to spell and remember. Avoid using hyphens or numbers, as they can be confusing for users.
  2. Choose a reputable hosting provider: Look for a hosting provider that offers a good uptime guarantee, strong security measures, and excellent customer support. It's also a good idea to choose a provider that offers a variety of hosting plans so that you can upgrade as your forum grows.
  3. Consider your budget: While it's important to invest in good hosting and a strong domain name, it's also important to stay within your budget. Look for hosting providers that offer competitive pricing and discounts for long-term plans.
  4. Think about scalability: As your forum grows, you'll want a hosting plan that can accommodate more traffic and data. Look for a hosting provider that offers scalable solutions so that you can easily upgrade as needed.
  5. Check for compatibility: Make sure that the hosting provider you choose is compatible with the forum software you've chosen. This will ensure that your forum runs smoothly and efficiently.

Some trustworthy hosting companies: USHost247 - Namecheap - Godaddy - Hostinger

Software Platform

There are many forum software options available, each with their own set of features and capabilities. Here are a few factors to consider when choosing forum software for your new forum:
  1. Ease of use: Look for forum software that is easy to install and configure, with a user-friendly interface for both admins and users.
  2. Customization options: Choose software that offers a variety of customization options, such as the ability to change the layout and design of your forum, add plugins and extensions, and customize user permissions.
  3. Security: Make sure the software you choose has strong security measures in place to protect against spam, hacking, and other threats.
  4. Mobile support: With an increasing number of users accessing the internet on mobile devices, it's important to choose software that is mobile-friendly and responsive.
  5. Cost: Consider your budget when choosing forum software. Some options are open-source and free, while others are paid with subscription or one-time licensing fees.
Some popular forum software options include:

  • phpBB: A free, open-source platform that is easy to use and customize.
  • XenForo: A paid platform with a wide range of features and customization options.
  • Simple Machines Forum: A free, open-source platform that is lightweight and easy to install and configure.
  • InvisionCommunity: Configured responsive-designed platform to fit your company's needs.

Promotion and Gaining Members

Promoting your forum and attracting new members is an important part of building a successful online community. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  1. Use social media: Share links to your forum and engage with potential members on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  2. Reach out to influencers: Contact influencers or bloggers in your niche and ask them to share your forum with their followers.
  3. Participate in relevant online communities: Look for other forums, groups, or communities that are related to your niche and become an active member. Share your expertise and knowledge, and include a link to your forum in your signature or profile.
  4. Use email marketing: Build an email list of potential members and send newsletters or updates about your forum.
  5. Optimize your forum for search engines: Make sure your forum is search engine optimized so that it can be easily found by users searching for topics related to your niche.
  6. Offer incentives: Consider offering incentives for new members to join and participate in your forum, such as exclusive content or access to special features.

How to keep working on your forum

Engaging with your community and keeping your forum up to date are key to the success and longevity of your online community. Here are a few tips to help you do this:

  1. Engage with your community: Regularly participate in discussions and encourage other members to do the same. Respond to questions and feedback, and show your appreciation for active members.
  2. Moderate your forum: Keep an eye on your forum to ensure that discussions stay on topic and that users follow the rules. Be proactive in addressing any inappropriate or disruptive behavior.
  3. Keep your forum up to date: Regularly update your forum software and plugins to ensure that your forum runs smoothly and is secure. This may also involve adding new features and functionality to keep things fresh and engaging for your members.
  4. Encourage user-generated content: Encourage members to create and share content, such as blog posts, articles, or videos, on your forum. This can help keep the content fresh and interesting and can also help to foster a sense of community ownership.
  5. Stay informed: Keep up with industry trends and best practices in online communities and forums, and consider implementing new ideas and strategies to improve your forum.

To summarize, starting a new forum involves many considerations, from determining the purpose and niche of your forum to choosing the right platform and promoting it to attract an initial group of users. Engaging with your community and moderating your forum are also important for maintaining a positive and productive atmosphere. Keeping your forum up to date with the latest software and features can also help ensure its success. Hi Yohanna,

You can start off with a free forum, either self hosted or with a free forum hosting company. There are no monetization methods available though. What would you like to do? Do you have some kind of plan or project in mind?

Surely you have it wrong way round.
To start a forum first decide on your niche
No - don't just start a forum for the sake of it (they are no longer a way to make money

Start a forum in a niche that you are passionate about, and in a niche where you think there are no current forums, or that they could be better!

Actually, I have built a forum this year. I used MyBB in order to skip fees for premium software. By running forums on free platforms, I will be able to run forums for a long time even when I do not earn anything.
